Klasziekaal: education within hospital walls

Hospitals in West-Flanders have joined forces to bring education closer to sick, hospitalised children. They have set up an initiative called “Klaziekaal”, which is a support centre for the education of sick children in West-Flanders. It is a temporary pilot project with a view to implementation throughout Flanders.

Hospitals wanting to provide education within the hospital walls need to be recognised as a type 5 school. The Jan Yperman hospital was granted this recognition for their paediatric psychiatry department (Twoape). The children who are in day therapy at the unit can attend classes with a qualified teacher there. Twoape will be moving to the main campus at some point, but until that time, hospitalised children within the Jan Yperman Hospital cannot use the hospital school. The recognition is in fact linked to the location.

Apart from the Type 5 schools, other options are available for children to receive education when they are unable to go to school. This is exactly the information Klaziekaal intends to collect and make available to parents and children. With Klaziekaal, a beautiful cooperation was established between the type 5 schools, vzw Bednet and vzw School en Ziek Zijn. So that way, it is possible to continue following classes. The teacher can also visit the hospital.

More information is available on the website:

Ask about it at the paediatric ward or through the social service, mieke.staelens@yperman.net.

Visit

  • Parents can visit throughout the day. Other visitors must adhere to the visiting hours.
  • The paediatrician visits daily between 9:00 and 11:00. The head nurse also visits every day in the morning.
In order to provide quality and patient-safe care, it is important for nurses to exchange information. There are consultations between 6:30 and 7:00, from 13:00 to 13:30 and from 21:00 to 21:30.

Food

  • We offer the children an appropriate diet in consultation with the doctor.
  • A weekly menu is displayed on the board in the room, if this is not the case, please ask for it. A dietician comes to the room every day in the morning to record the diet for the following day. Feel free to tell her your child's preference.
If you are not present, please use the weekly menu to indicate your child's preference and hand it in to the nursing station. The children have the same meal times as the parents.
  • Other family members can use the bistro on the ground floor. Open on weekdays from 9:00 to 18:00. Open on weekends and public holidays from 14:00 to 18:00
