Between the care and the obligatory rest, you are welcome in our playroom.
Hospitals in West-Flanders have joined forces to bring education closer to sick, hospitalised children. They have set up an initiative called “Klaziekaal”, which is a support centre for the education of sick children in West-Flanders. It is a temporary pilot project with a view to implementation throughout Flanders.
Hospitals wanting to provide education within the hospital walls need to be recognised as a type 5 school. The Jan Yperman hospital was granted this recognition for their paediatric psychiatry department (Twoape). The children who are in day therapy at the unit can attend classes with a qualified teacher there. Twoape will be moving to the main campus at some point, but until that time, hospitalised children within the Jan Yperman Hospital cannot use the hospital school. The recognition is in fact linked to the location.
Apart from the Type 5 schools, other options are available for children to receive education when they are unable to go to school. This is exactly the information Klaziekaal intends to collect and make available to parents and children. With Klaziekaal, a beautiful cooperation was established between the type 5 schools, vzw Bednet and vzw School en Ziek Zijn. So that way, it is possible to continue following classes. The teacher can also visit the hospital.
