At the start of orthodontic treatment, the orthodontist will often determine that the upper jaw is actually too narrow. In that case, it is not really possible to line up all the teeth properly and a less than ideal compromise has to be made. It may then be better to first widen the jaw with a so-called distraction method so that more space becomes available.
