Nerves are also located between the bones, muscles and ligaments of the forefoot. Such a nerve can become pinched between the two bones (usually the third and fourth ray) due to, among other things, sagging of the forefoot. As a result, the nerve forms a small spindle-shaped mass, called a neuroma.
Pressure on this ‘growth’ causes a typical pain that occurs when walking on or compressing the forefoot. The diagnosis is primarily clinical, but sometimes an MRI can be helpful.
Your doctor will discuss the treatment options with you.
