Disease

Narcolepsy

Narcolepsy is a sleep-wake disorder.

The hallmark symptom of people with narcolepsy is drowsiness and uncontrollable daytime sleepiness. Even when patients have had sufficient sleep, they suffer from sleepiness on a daily basis.

In addition, approximately 60-70% of patients also have cataplexy. These are brief bouts of muscle weakness that are triggered by certain emotions, such as laughing loudly, anger, a sudden encounter or during sports. Usually, it is the neck, face and leg muscles that weaken. A cataplexy attack lasts only a few seconds, or a few tens of seconds at most.
