Neuromodulation or neurostimulation is a treatment for people with permanent nerve pain, especially after neck and back surgery.
Electrodes are inserted into the epidural space in the back up to a specific level on top of the spinal cord. The electrical pulses emitted by the electrodes affect the pain pathways in the spinal cord, and therefore, the final signal sent to the brain is no longer considered to be ‘pain’. So the brain is, as it were, misled.
