Osteotomy (surgical correction of the knee)

An osteotomy or axis correction of the knee is used to treat younger people with an abnormal leg position.

This involves creating an artificial fracture in the leg, whereby the axis is corrected to improve the pressure distribution in the knee. The rehabilitation of this is slow (about 4 months). Complications are not frequent but do occur: bleeding, infection and nerve damage, which in some cases require reoperation. The plate also generally requires to be removed after one year.
