Ureterorenoscopy (URS)

SERVICE(S): Kidney Stone clinic

Ureterorenoscopy stands for keyhole surgery of the ureter. The aim of this procedure is to remove one or more stones through the natural route.

A long, fine instrument (ureteroscope) is inserted through the urethra, bladder and down the ureter into the kidney. No incision is made. Thanks to very fine instruments, the stone can, if necessary, also be crushed by laser beam before the various fragments are removed. The stone fragments are removed using fine forceps or a basket.

When one or more stones are located in the kidney, a foldable viewing instrument (flexible ureterorenoscopy) is used so that the entire kidney can be searched for stones and then crushed and/or removed.
