Electrophysiological examination (EFO)

This is an examination to find the cause of the cardiac dysrhythmia. The electrical structures (conduction system) are examined.

The examination takes place under local anaesthesia. A catheter is inserted from the groin into the heart, which allows us to check how the heart is activated and whether arrhythmias can be provoked. The examination lasts approximately 30 to 60 minutes. The results can then determine further treatment (drugs, ablation, defibrillator/pacemaker = ICD).

The electrophysiological examination takes place in a legally designated hospital. The Jan Yperman Hospital works together with AZ Delta in Roeselare for this. Depending on the type of arrhythmia, it is sometimes decided to first discuss the procedure details with a cardiologist.

Please contact your treating doctor for more information.
