Benign enlargement of the prostate is common in men over the age of 50. The precise cause is unknown. The male hormone testosterone may have something to do with it.
The enlarged prostate compresses the urethra and causes urinary symptoms. You often urinate in small amounts, even at night. You have trouble holding urine and sometimes leak some urine. During urination, it may take a while before the stream starts; sometimes you have to squeeze a little. Your urine stream is weaker and stops several times during urination. Afterwards, you may drip or have the feeling that the bladder is not completely empty.
