The oral mucous membranes are located in the gums, cheek, lips, tongue and palate. Abnormalities of the oral mucous membranes are very common and often your dentist can already make a correct diagnosis and start appropriate treatment.
If it is unclear what type of lesion it is or if a lesion persists despite treatment, your dentist can refer you to an oral surgeon for further examination. Since mucosal abnormalities can be a manifestation of a local problem (e.g. fungal infection), but also of general disorders (e.g. diabetes), the doctor can perform further examinations if necessary. These can consist of imaging, blood tests, taking a swab or even taking a tissue sample (biopsy). When the diagnosis has been confirmed, the correct treatment can be initiated.
Your doctor will discuss the treatment options with you.
