Hearing loss

Hearing loss is a reduction in hearing ability. There are different types of hearing loss.

Sensorineural hearing loss is the result of a problem at the cochlea or the higher neural pathways. Hence the other widely used term 'nerve-related hearing loss'.

Conductive hearing loss is the result of a hearing impairment at the structures responsible for transmitting sound vibrations to the cochlea (also referred to as 'conductive deafness'), i.e. due to a problem in the auditory canal, eardrum and ossicle chain.

Mixed hearing loss is a combination of sensorineural and conductive hearing loss.
