Acute treatment of kidney stones

SERVICE(S): Kidney Stone clinic

In case of acute renal colic, it is especially important to drink enough, but best after the episode has passed. During acute pain, it is better to drink little, because drinking will put even more pressure on the kidney and the pain will be even worse. Painkillers and possibly medicines to relax the muscles in the ureters will also be prescribed, so that the stone can be excreted more quickly. Larger stones have little chance of excreting spontaneously and require different treatment techniques.

In the treatment, a distinction should be made between the acute treatment and prevention:

  • Acute treatment: see the urologist.
  • After the acute phase, attention should be given to prevention. This advice is given by the nephrologist.
