Allergy vaccination or immunotherapy

Allergy vaccination or immunotherapy, or desensitisation, aims to reduce or even eliminate the inappropriate, ‘allergic’ reaction of the immune system.

By regularly exposing the body to gradually increasing doses of the allergen over a long period, a tolerance can be built up. There are different types of immunotherapy:

  • subcutaneous immunotherapy: injections in the upper arm.
  • sublingual immunotherapy: drops or tablets under the tongue.

In principle, the treatment lasts at least three years.
