Treatment of fractures of the lower jaw

The lower jaw can break in many places.

These fractures usually occur at the chin, the corner of the jaw or higher up near the jaw joint just in front of your ear. When part of the lower jaw is in an abnormal position due to the fracture, your bite will no longer feel right: you will not make contact, or just excessive contact, with certain teeth and moving the mouth is usually painful.

Lower jaw fractures therefore often need to be treated surgically to avoid problems with chewing and biting later on. This can be done with titanium plates or by temporarily fixing the teeth of the upper and lower jaw together. The technique used depends on the nature and severity of the fractures.
