Treatment of eye socket fractures

The eye socket is the bony box that gives your eye maximum protection. Surprisingly, the bottom of this box (on which the eyeball rests) is relatively weak and breaks easily.

A fracture of the base of the eye socket may cause the eyeball to move a little, or the eye to move less smoothly. As a result, the coordination between your left and right eye is disturbed and you suffer from annoying double vision.

That is why serious fractures of the eye socket base must be repaired, usually by inserting a thin titanium plate through a small incision in the lower eyelid. This plate restores, as it were, the bottom of the eye socket on which your eye rests.

For these procedures, you usually stay in hospital overnight. In view of the functional importance of your eye, you will also have to have regular check-ups with the oral surgeon and possibly the ophthalmologist afterwards.
