Sp Geriatrics is a 30-bed ward for geriatric patients with cognitive problems (such as dementia, depression, psychosis). Our team monitors behavioural and other problems that may arise in the context of dementia or cerebral haemorrhage. Additionally, our service is in charge of rehabilitation after a period of acute illness.
Older patients are at risk of losing their autonomy due to illness, which may make it difficult to return to their homes. We make every effort to maintain or improve the patient's independence despite the cognitive problems. We help organise home care or plan an admission to a residential care home. An admission to the Sp Geriatrics ward is subject to specific statutory regulations and should be at least equally long as the admission to the acute referral ward.
Treatment is provided by a multidisciplinary team, consisting of geriatricians, nurses, healthcare professionals, social nurse, psychologist, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, dieticians, logistics staff, etc.
In consultation with the team members, and in dialogue with the patient and their family, the attending geriatrician draws up a plan for the future. A discharge to home is sometimes possible after an intensive rehabilitation at the Sp Geriatrics department and, of course, with the necessary first-line care (e.g. home nursing, cleaning service, meals at home, day centres, etc.). If this is no longer an option, we work closely with the social services of the residential and care centres to arrange a placement.
Structure in care provision at the ward is essential.
Relatives and visitors are asked to respect visiting hours between 15:00 and 19:30. Exceptions can be made in consultation with the head nurse.
