Hair loss, baldness

There are two types of hair loss: androgenetic alopecia and alopecia areata.

Androgenetic alopecia

Androgenetic alopecia means that you lose some of your hair. Both men and women can have this. Position plays a major role. When you are born, you may already have a predisposition to androgenetic alopecia.

Alopecia areata

Alopecia areata causes bald patches in the areas of skin where hair grows. These bald patches are usually round or oval in shape. Alopecia areata mainly occurs on the scalp, but can also develop in other areas of the body where hair grows, such as eyebrows, beard area, armpits and pubic area.

Alopecia areata does not make you feel ill. Baldness can, however, have psychological consequences, such as insecurity about appearance or difficulties in making social contacts.
