Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a disease of the nerve cells that control the muscles. This neuromuscular (nerve/muscle) disorder leads to the insufficient muscle function.
This occurs because the motor nerve cells in the spinal cord and the lower part of the brain 'the brainstem' die. As a result, the signals from the brain no longer reach the muscles. The brain is then no longer able to initiate muscle movements.
Your doctor will discuss the treatment options with you.
