Biceps tendon tear

Biceps tendon ruptures at the shoulder commonly occur in conjunction with ruptures of the rotator cuff. Sometimes biceps tendon ruptures can occur in isolation, especially as a result of intense work or strenuous exercise.

If the rupture is incomplete, or if the rupture is fresh, it can be operated on in selective cases. Biceps tendon tenodesis is then performed.

Most prefer not to have a repair procedure performed: this almost always does not cause any significant impairment after a few months, since there is still a second tendon that extends to the coracoid process. Moreover, an existing rupture (more than a few days old) cannot technically be repaired.

Sometimes, a biceps tendon rupture gives rise to a 'Popeye sign': a more pronounced 'ball of muscle' visible on the upper arm when the biceps muscle is contracted. Apart from the cosmetic aspect, this has no major consequences and does not lead to loss of strength.
