Hallux Rigidus (osteoarthritis at the base of the big toe)

This is osteoarthritis at the base of the big toe, the metatarsophalangeal joint (MTP).

If the cartilage of this joint is damaged by trauma or repetitive pressure, small bone spurs are created at the rim of the joint. These impair normal movement, making the joint stiff, rigid, and possibly painful with certain movements and when trying on certain shoes.
