Head and neck tumours

‘Head and neck tumours’ is a collective term for cancers in the upper respiratory tract and the major salivary glands. This group includes cancers of the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, nose and sinuses and the major salivary glands.

The main risk factors for cancers of the oral cavity, pharynx and larynx are tobacco and alcohol use. There is also a link between throat cancer and infection with certain types of the human papillomavirus (HPV).

For cancer of the sinuses (paranasal sinuses), one of the main risk factors is exposure to wood dust (woodworkers). Hereditary factors can also play a role.
