Gout is a rheumatic disease in which uric acid crystals precipitate in a joint (usually the big toe), causing an inflammatory response.
This inflammation gives rise to a painful, red, warm and swollen joint. Gout occurs in people who have elevated levels of uric acid in the blood for a long time. Kidney problems and dehydration can also trigger gout.
