The inside of the knee is covered with cartilage. This ensures smooth and painless movement when walking and using the knee. This cartilage protects the knee itself, as it were. It can be damaged as a result of wear and tear or trauma.
Unlike, for example, a bone fracture, a cartilage injury does not heal by itself. Cartilage has no blood supply of its own, so it cannot recover once it is damaged.
Cartilage injuries eventually lead to wear and tear of the knee joint. In many cases, a cartilage injury causes little or no discomfort and no treatment is required. In some cases, if damage is more extensive, further treatment may be required.
