Lactose intolerance in children

Lactose intolerance means that lactose (milk sugar) is not digested normally in the small intestine and therefore ferments in the large intestine. This then gives rise to complaints of abdominal pain and/or flatulence and/or persistent diarrhoea. Lactose malabsorption can be a congenital phenomenon or a temporary phenomenon after a previous stomach flu.
