Pleural fluid

The pleural cavity is the virtual space between the lungs and the chest. Fluid can build up in this space.

Causes of this can include infection or malignancy. If this fluid does not disappear spontaneously, a pleural tap will be performed. If this proves insufficient, you will be referred to the surgeon. Depending on your disorder and general condition, a chest drain can then be placed or keyhole surgery or a thoracoscopy may be proposed.

The aim of a thoracoscopy is to further investigate the underlying cause. Furthermore, inserting talcum powder can trigger an adhesion reaction around the lung, which prevents the build-up of fluid.
