Tonsillitis is an inflammation of the tonsils. This is also commonly referred to as a ‘throat infection’. It is accompanied by a sore throat, difficulty swallowing and feeling ill. The tonsils can also be very large and therefore narrow the pharynx. Foul-smelling debris can also build up in the tonsils. In these cases, it may be recommended to have the tonsils removed.
These primarily occur in the first years of life. Later, other organs take over this function. Repeatedly inflamed tonsils (angina) are very bothersome. Sometimes, they are so swollen that their size makes breathing difficult.
