The collarbone (clavicle) can fracture in several places during a fall. A common example is a fall off a bicycle or when playing football, rugby, etc. The collarbone breaks due to the direct impact to the shoulder. This causes pain, swelling and sometimes a palpable fracture.
Clavicle fractures are often treated conservatively, i.e. without surgery. In specific cases, surgery is nevertheless indicated. Your doctor will discuss the options with you.
