Tetanus usually occurs when a wound becomes infected by bacteria called Clostridium tetani. This is not only found on rusty objects, but is also often found in street refuse, soil, faeces and dust.
The tetanus bacterium produces toxins that affect the nervous system. It can take two days to several weeks after infection for the disease to break out.
