A metabolic evaluation is a series of studies designed to shed light on why you produce kidney stones and how you can prevent relapse.

Why?

There are different types of kidney stones, each with their specific characteristics. Knowing the type of stone and its risk factors has implications for treatment and preventive advice that can be individualised.

Specifically, the metabolic evaluation answers the following questions:

  • Why do I create kidney stones?
  • What measures are appropriate to reduce my risk of relapse?

Who for?

General: In patients with moderate/high risk of stone formation, this is definitely recommended. In low-risk patients, this is determined individually in consultation with the patient.

  • People who repeatedly suffer from kidney stones.
  • Children and young people under 20 with kidney stones.
  • Unique kidney and/or renal insufficiency.
  • Familial occurrence of kidney stones.
  • Brushite / uric acid stones / cystine stones / infection stones.
  • Underlying diseases associated with stones (such as Crohn's disease, nephrocalcinosis, sarcoidosis, primary hyperparathyroidism, malabsorption syndromes).
  • Suspected genetic cause.
  • Stones associated with certain medications.
  • Anatomical abnormalities of the urinary tract.

What investigations?

  • A blood draw.
  • A urine sample.
  • A 24-hour urine collection: twice. (A test will be carried out once for which ± €40 will be charged)
  • An analysis of the collected stone.
  • A consultation with the nephrologist to discuss the results and specific advice for prevention.
