Immobilisation in plaster cast or brace

If a kneecap is dislocated for the first time, the treatment will usually be non-surgical.

A temporary immobilisation in plaster or brace is necessary in some cases. Afterwards, physical therapy is recommended to strengthen the muscles.

In case of a patellar luxation, a ligament that helps keep the kneecap in place is torn. This band is called the "MPFL". It provides stability to the kneecap, increasing the risk of a new patellar luxation. After a first patellar luxation, the chance of this happening again is +/- 20-25%. After a second patellar luxation, there is a greater than 50% chance of this occurring again.
