Neck infections can lead to serious problems as they can threaten the airway. Therefore, urgent treatment with a combination of antibiotics and drainage of the abscess is usually required.
The abscess will usually be drained under short general anaesthesia. Most patients remain hospitalised for several days afterwards to ensure that no additional complications occur.
