The 'golden standard' for the treatment of advanced osteoarthritis of the knee is a knee replacement.
The broken knee joint is replaced with an artificial joint. In a new knee operation, a new joint is created by removing a few millimetres of broken bone and cartilage and replacing it with new metal and polyethylene (hardened plastic) parts. Several techniques are available in which the cruciate ligaments and the kneecap can be either be replaced or preserved.
