Kidney stones are crushed with a kidney stone crusher. This is a device with a transmitter that is placed against the skin and generates shock waves. These shock waves are carefully directed so that they converge in the stone, which then crumbles.
Several treatments are sometimes required, especially for large or hard stones. The pain is usually not too bad and can be well controlled with a pain pump.
