If the multidisciplinary team considers you eligible for surgery, you will be referred to the surgeon. After all, surgical removal of the tumour offers the best chances of survival for early-stage lung tumours.
In principle, the surgeon will propose a thoracoscopic lobectomy with lymph node dissection. The lung lobe where the tumour is located is removed via keyhole surgery. Merely removing the tumour (wedge resection) is insufficient to prevent later relapse in the same lung lobe. In the case of small tumours in patients with limited lung function, a decision can be made to remove a smaller part of the lobe: a segmentectomy.
