Achilles tendon tears can be treated surgically or non-surgically.
Most Achilles tendon tears will be treated by surgical repair. The doctor decides this on a case-by-case basis after examining the nature of the injury, the general and local condition. In some cases, non-surgical treatment is preferable.
After surgery, a precise and disciplined rehabilitation schedule should be imposed, including temporary immobilisation, bracing and appropriate physical therapy.
In certain cases, an Achilles tendon rupture will be treated non-surgically, by applying an appropriate plaster cast for several weeks.
