Placement of bone anchors

If your orthodontist wants to move your teeth using braces or elastics, it may be necessary to provide one or more additional firm anchorage points. This can be achieved with the help of a so-called 'bone anchor'.

A bone anchor consists of a titanium plate that is attached to the bone of the upper or lower jaw with a few small screws. This prevents the anchor from moving. Your orthodontist can then attach elastic bands to the hooked end of the anchor that is visible in the mouth, for example, to move your teeth.

A bone anchor is usually placed under local anaesthesia.

If the anchors are no longer necessary, they can be removed again by the surgeon.
