Anal abscess surgery

The treatment of an abscess consists of making an opening in the skin to allow pus drainage from the infected cavity and thus reduce the internal pressure.

This can sometimes be performed under local anaesthetic, but most of the time an operation under general anaesthesia is necessary and a short hospitalisation is recommended. Hospitalisation may also be necessary, especially for diabetics and people with decreased immunity. Simply taking antibiotics is not a good treatment for an abscess, as antibiotics have a poor ability to penetrate the fluid of the abscess.
