The team

The speciality of Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary Diseases is offered in our hospital by two departments:

  • The following doctors are available to you at the Internal Diseases Association: Dr. Marieke Gallant, Dr. Koen Thorrez, Dr. Bart van Besien and Dr. Kenny Vlaemynck. They can be reached via route 32.
  • Dr. Christian Feys can be reached via route 26.

The most common tests are:

  • ultrasound and endoscopy of the entire digestive system (gastroscopy, coloscopy, rectoscopy and anuscopy (proctology))
  • examination of bile ducts and pancreatic ducts (‘ERCP’)

In addition, targeted examinations of certain organs are also carried out through a combination of ultrasound and endoscopy, so-called endoscopit ultrasound, where tissue can be obtained for examination under the microscope. This examination is performed by Dr. Marie Gallant.

Through our consultation, breath tests can be requested for:

  • detection of lactose intolerance
  • presence of helicobacter pylori in the stomach (urea breath test)
  • bacterial overgrowth (bile acid breath test)
  • pancreatic insufficiency (mixed triglyceride breath test).

In addition to diagnosis and treatment, particular attention is paid to cancer prevention and, in particular, colon cancer prevention. We refer to the websites www.bevolkingsonderzoek.be and www.stopdarmkanker.be, among others.
