An artificial urinary sphincter is a fluid-filled urinary cuff inside the body. The device can be fitted in both men and women.
The artificial urinary sphincter seals the urethra by means of the cuff. Before urinating, the patient presses the pump several times in the scrotum or in one of the labia, moving fluid from the cuff to the reservoir and opening the cuff. After some time (1-2 minutes), the fluid will flow back to the cuff (under the influence of the pressure in the reservoir) and thus close the urethra again.
