Bladder flushes

SERVICE(S): Urology

Depending on the nature of the polyp and the number of polyps already removed, a certain type of bladder flush will be prescribed.

To perform a bladder irrigation the nurse or doctor inserts a catheter through the urethra into the bladder. Insertion is not painful, but can be unpleasant.

Then, through this catheter, the flushing agent is introduced into the bladder, where it can exert its local effect. When all the fluid is in the bladder, the catheter is removed. It is necessary to keep this product inside for at least one hour. In principle, you can go home afterwards.

Bladder irrigation should be repeated regularly to be effective. Initially, the bladder will be flushed weekly and later monthly. However, there are various schemes, which can vary in duration from one to three years. The most suitable schedule will be discussed with you beforehand.

Types of bladder irrigation

BCG treatment

Immunotherapy is aimed at activating and/or multiplying certain cells in the immune system, thus allowing the body to fight cancer cells more vigorously.

Chemotherapy (Mitomycin, Farmorubicin)

Cytostatics (chemotherapy) inhibit cell growth by blocking cell division. This prevents the cancer cells from multiplying. By administering a chemotherapy drug directly into the bladder, it does not enter the bloodstream and you will not experience side effects such as hair loss or nausea.
