The adrenal gland is a small gland located on the kidney that produces a lot of different hormones. In normal circumstances, therefore, we have two adrenal glands.
An adrenal gland consists of two distinct areas. The inside, also called adrenal medulla, is responsible for the production of adrenaline and noradrenaline, among others. The adrenal cortex on the outside produces a lot of hormones such as DHEA, cortisol (= stress hormone) and aldosterone (= regulate salt levels in the blood); in small quantities, sex hormones such as testosterone, oestrogens and progesterone are also produced.
