The cornerstone of treating haemorrhoids, whether surgical intervention is necessary or not, remains dietary and lifestyle modification.
The most important changes are a higher intake of fibre (high-fibre diet), by changing the diet, by taking a supplement (e.g., a carbohydrate supplement) or by taking a carbohydrate diet (e.g. Fibion®), sufficient fluid intake and exercise.
These measures contribute to a more regulated, but not necessarily softer bowel movement. The aim is to avoid both hard stools and diarrhoea, with soft and well-formed stools. This bowel movement seems to be the best way to avoid all kinds of problems in the anal area.
