Fistulotomy (surgical treatment of perianal fistulae)

The treatment of a fistula always requires surgery. Although fistula surgery is often quite simple, there is still a risk of complications and the procedure is therefore best performed by a specialist in proctology.

The treatment can sometimes be performed simultaneously to the treatment of the abscess. This involves a fistulotomy (=opening the fistula passage) and is only suitable for superficial fistulas or fistulas that only pass through the sphincter. In this way, the fistula's trajectory falls open, like a book that has fallen open. Sufficient sphincter tissue remains to maintain continence.
