Dental abscess

If a tooth cavity is left untreated and slowly increases in size, this can eventually lead to pain. If the cause is not treated, this can even lead to an actual tooth abscess. In addition to severe, often throbbing pain, there is also swelling and perhaps even discharge of pus.

Sometimes a dental abscess can be treated with antibiotics, but the real cause of the problem (the tooth) often needs to be addressed too. This will often involve the dentist removing the nerve from your tooth. Sometimes it is necessary to make an incision in the abscess to allow the pus to drain off or to pull the tooth. This can be done at the oral surgeon's office.
