Anuscopy/rectoscopy (examination of the rectum and anus)

An anuscopy or rectoscopy is a way of seeing inside and examining the mucous membrane and haemorrhoids through a hollow tube as thick as a finger.

The examination usually takes place in the knee-elbow position or left side-lying position, which is rather inelegant for the patient.

An additional examination will often be scheduled to look higher up in the large intestine and check for any other abnormalities such as polyps (growths in the intestine), tumours or other causes of bleeding. A flexible endoscopy (colonoscopy) is therefore a very good additional examination, and is recommended for patients over 45.
