During the examination, a small amount of contrast medium is injected into the joint using a fine needle, after which X-ray images of the joint are taken. Sometimes it is injected with medication.
This examination detects tears in the joint capsule or tendons and/or identifies cartilage injuries or loose fragments in the joints, in addition to detecting meniscus tears. It is usually followed by a CT or MRI scan.
