The lower jaw can break in many places.
Usually, these fractures are located at the level of the chin, the angle of the jaw or higher up near the temporomandibular joint that is located just in front of the ear. When part of the lower jaw is in an abnormal position due to the fracture, the bite will no longer feel right: you are not making contact, or just too much contact with certain teeth, and moving the mouth is usually painful.
Fractures of the lower jaw therefore often have to be treated surgically so that you do not go on to have later problems with chewing and biting.
The doctor will discuss the treatment options with you in detail.
