During a bronchoscopy, the inside of the airways and lungs are examined. This is done with a bronchoscope, a flexible tube containing a lens. The doctor can view the images directly on a TV screen.
This examination inspects the lungs and airways to diagnose a potential lung disease, detect any abnormalities in the mucous membrane for further laboratory investigation, remove mucus from deeper in the lungs, detect and remove a foreign body, or localise and treat a pulmonary haemorrhage.
