Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of the most common conditions affecting the hand. The sensory nerve becomes trapped in a canal at the junction of the hand and wrist.

The most important symptoms are ‘tingling’ at the top of the thumb - index finger - middle finger and part of the ring finger. Most patients wake up several times during the night and need to shake their hands to reduce the tingling sensation. If this condition has been present for a long time, there may be a loss of sensitivity in the fingers.

The diagnosis is made on the basis of the clinical symptoms, but very often the treating doctor will request an additional examination: an electromyography or EMG.
