Testicular torsion (testis torsion)

SERVICE(S): Urology

Sudden pain in the testicle may be due to a twisted testicle, or rather testicular torsion (testis torsion). The testicle rotates around its own axis, thereby restricting the blood supply to the testicle. This is very painful.

Pain is felt inside the testicle, which is often drawn up high in the scrotum. The pain radiates to the groin and lower abdomen. It is perceived as very severe pain and is often accompanied by nausea and vomiting. There may be a swelling in the testicle (hard lump).

The pain is caused by the testicle being deprived of oxygen. This is because the blood supply to the testicle is cut off. It is necessary to twist the testicle back within 6 hours so that oxygen can reach the tissue again.

Treatments

If the diagnosis is made within six hours, the urologist will operate immediately. The scrotum is opened under anesthetic and the testicle is twisted back. It then changes colour from blue back to pink.

If surgery is too late, the testicle will be dark blue or black and will no longer turn pink after being twisted back. The testicle is then lost and must be removed. It is therefore very important to seek immediate help if you suspect a twisted testicle (torsio testis).

Your doctor will discuss the treatment options with you.

Please contact your treating doctor for more information.
